Regular dental check-ups are very important to ensure your child’s teeth develop normally, and help put them on the right course to enjoy a lifetime of healthy smiles. You’ll find our dentists are extremely experienced in helping young children feel at ease, and will do everything possible to make sure they are comfortable and relaxed; our aim is to make sure dental visits are as enjoyable as possible.
We generally recommend your child has their first dental visit by age 3. This first visit is simply an examination and doesn’t involve any treatment. If any treatment is necessary then we’ll discuss all the available options after the examination. During regular dental check-ups we will:
- Remove any plaque or tartar from their teeth
- Check for any signs of cavities
- Talk to you and your child about how to care for their teeth at home, and provide practical demonstrations on brushing and flossing
- Apply fluoride treatments if necessary
Advantages of Regular Dental Check-ups
There are several advantages to early dental care, as it’s a great way to get your child used to visiting the dentist so they begin to see it as part of everyday life rather than something to be scared of. It also enables us to pick up on any problems such as tooth decay, when treatment will be less invasive, decreasing the chances of your child will suffering from toothache, or developing a dental abscess.
Regular dental check-ups allow us to assess the way your child’s teeth and jaws are developing. This enables us to detect any problems that may arise in the future, for example any issues with the way their teeth occlude or bite together. Sometimes early orthodontic intervention can help lessen the need for treatment in the future through correcting problems before all their permanent teeth have fully erupted.
